A Journey of Learning and Growth in Spine Surgery
Dr Sheng-Chieh Tseng recently completed his 2024 APSS-Medtronic Spine Fellowship report. This report reflects on an enriching three-month journey from last June to September.
During this time, he trained under Dr Brian Hsu and Dr Bhisham Singh at NSW Spine Specialists, gaining extensive experience in adult degenerative spine conditions, spinal deformity surgeries, and paediatric scoliosis treatments.
Key takeaways from his observership:
- Exposure to advanced cervical spine procedures – observing lateral mass screw techniques & cervical pedicle screw fixation
- Insights into complex lumbar deformity corrections – including ALIF approach
- Paediatric scoliosis surgery at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead – an experience rarely available in Taiwan
Beyond the operating room, Dr Tseng participated in weekly case discussions, multidisciplinary team collaborations, and international conferences such as the APSS Annual Meeting 2024 and Deformity Down Under 2024. These experiences deepened his understanding of surgical decision-making, AI-driven scoliosis screening, and spine alignment strategies.
Dr Tseng expresses his gratitude to Dr Brian Hsu, Dr Bhisham Singh and NSW Spine Specialists, for this invaluable opportunity. His report highlights the importance of global collaboration in spine surgery and how such fellowships help advance patient care worldwide.
